Some media reports misrepresent the cause of his death

WASHINGTON D.C. - The Committee to Protect Mesothelioma Victims (CPMV) offers its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Warren Zevon, the wonderfully talented singer/songwriter who yesterday became the latest victim of the asbestos-caused disease.

As we mourn the passing of a genuine American talent, we also believe it's deeply unfortunate that many news organizations are linking Mr. Zevon's disease to other health-related issues like smoking.

While nobody would contend that smoking was good for Mr. Zevon, the CPMV would point out that none of those other issues killed Mr. Zevon " asbestos exposure did. The way he lived and the way he faced his death already embed his passing with deep significance; to that we would add the chance to educate people about the relatively rare disease that claimed his life.

Mesothelioma is caused in the United States by asbestos. You inhale the material and it can strike decades later. Even children of asbestos-exposed workers have contracted the disease by inhaling the materials from their parent's clothing. Most people diagnosed with "meso" die within a year.

Oddly, this most recent asbestos-related tragedy comes as Congress considers legislation that would remove much of the liability of asbestos-related health problems from the companies who used the materials. U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) has introduced Senate Bill S.1125 (S.1125), a bill that would eliminate a victim's right to a day in court while dramatically reducing compensation to victims and their families. Those children mentioned above " the ones exposed via their parents - would have all their rights removed.

There's more, but the point here is to add a detail to the obituary of Warren Zevon, not rant about unfair business bailouts. If you want to know more about this issue, and how it impacts victims in your community, please do not hesitate to contact us.

And long live the music and memory of Warren Zevon.

Mesothelioma Info

Mesothelioma cancer affects the mesothelial tissue lining of three large body cavities: the pleura (lung cavity), peritoneum (abdominal cavity) and pericardium (heart sac). Pleural mesothelioma, the most common type of malignant mesothelioma, is often confused with asbestos lung cancer because of the diseases' close proximity.

Mesothelioma symptoms vary dependent on the type of mesothelioma you are suffering from, but can include chronic coughing, chest pain, difficulty breathing (dyspnea), fever and nausea. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma, contact a mesothelioma lawyer or asbestos attorney to get information about your right to compensation.
